Baby with a Ball (or fruit) - Hand Signed P.V. Canervari - Studio de Van Dyck
Between 1613 and 1632, van Dyck travelled all over Europe – from his native Antwerp (where he began working as a painter, initially under Hendrick van Balen and later with Peter Paul Rubens), to England for a brief stay at the court of James I and then to Italy, where he had the chance to get to know the old masters. He then finally settled back in Flanders.
In the original painting with the title The Three Eldest Children of Charles I and which is an oil painting on canvas of 1635 by Anthony van Dyck down resident in the Galleria Sabauda in Turin the “ball” looks more like a Fruit, possibly an apple. This work is thought to be of the young son (on right) of Charles I by the name of James II.
It shows Charles II (left), Mary (centre) and James II (Right), the three eldest children of Charles I and his wife Henrietta Maria of France, with a spaniel to the left. (King Charles Spaniel).
It was commissioned by their mother to send to her sister Christine of France in Turin.
